The University opened for teaching in 1849 as "Queen's College Galway" with 68 students. One year later it became part of the Queen's University of Ireland. The Irish Universities Act, 1908 made this college a constituent college of the new National University of Ireland, and under a new charter the name of the University changed to "University College Galway".

Technological University Dublin or TU Dublin is Ireland's first technological university, established on 1 January 2019 and with a history stretching back to 1887 through the amalgamated Dublin Institute of Technology which progressed from the first technical education institution in Ireland, the City of Dublin Technical Schools. It is the second-largest third-level institution in Ireland, with a student population of 28,500.

Shannon College of Hotel Management was founded in 1951 as Ireland's first designated College of Hotel Management. Since 2015 it is fully incorporated into the NUI Galway. The college was founded by Dr. Brendan O'Regan and is based in Shannon Airport, County Clare. It was set up with input from Aer Rianta.
Griffith College is among the largest colleges in Ireland, which was founded in 1974. It remains to be a centre for learning excellence since the instigation. Dublin is the main campus of Griffith College. The college offers undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, international, and short courses in various disciplines.

The College offers a range of programmes from masters level to short certificate programmes. The National College of Ireland is a non-profit state-supported advanced education establishment in Dublin's city centre. NCI receives state financing as a core grant directly from the Department of Education and Skills.
Dublin Business School (DBS), incorporating Portobello College, is one of the two largest independent colleges in Ireland. With over 9,000 students, DBS provides a range of full-time and part-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with courses in subject areas such as business, law, accounting, event management, IT, arts, media studies and psychology.
